Some people devote their life to making a difference in some one else’s life. Cornerstone is proud to say that Angie Taylor (Memphis IT Department) is one of those individuals. Every year Angie and her husband travel to Steer Town, Jamaica during their April “vacation” to build homes for the homeless, improve the local community center, feed hungry children, and minister to patients in a nursing home in Saint Ann Bay. Through a program offered by IsleGo Missions, Angie and her husband Greg, along with many others from the Colonial Hills Church (Southaven, MS) reach out a helping hand to these proud, but poverty stricken people. Most of the people in this town live in houses made of scrap lumber, cardboard boxes or worse yet...on the street. This year the “building team” consisted of 6 (Angie and five men) and for the fourth year in a row, a house was built, despite battling rain and sickness. The volunteer mission group also built playground equipment for the children of Steer Town who had never seen a see-saw or monkey bars. To their delight, swings were also added to replace swings that had been stolen many years ago. After learning how to play on the equipment and exhausting themselves at recess, 106 of the small school children received an afternoon snack that was also provided by the mission group. “We watched them take a bite, then wrap it up and put it in their bags to take home to their family” said Angie. “What a selfless act, to eat only what they need, to feed someone else in their family that may not get something to eat that day.”
Jamaica is one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Yet the majority of Jamaicans live with unemployment, poverty and destitution. Many struggle daily to survive and make ends meet. Steer Town is one of these struggling communities. Angie Taylor and the volunteers from Colonia Hills Church are happy to spend their “vacation” sweating, painting, hammering, assembling, feeding, ministering and just plain working hard to supply whatever else is needed. They remain steadfast in their commitment to making a difference there. For more information regarding IsleGo Missions, please visit www.islego.com
