Nestled
in historic Norfolk, Virginia, the Old Dominion
University campus (188 acres) stretches from
the Elizabeth River to the Lafayette River.
Although situated in a metropolitan setting,
the University offers a small college look and
feel, with tree-lined walkways, a mix of old
and new buildings, and colorful gardens and
ponds. Founded in 1930 as a division of the
College of William and Mary, Old Dominion has
grown into its own over the years which is evident
when reviewing its current economic impact.
Business and research initiatives contribute
more than $600 million annually to the economy,
making the University the largest generator
of new jobs in the region.
Keeping
in line with the current growth occurring along
Virginia’s waterfront (newly dredged deep
channels and the $450 million APM marine terminal
under construction) it is no wonder that the
university launched a new undergraduate and
graduate program in international and maritime
trade such as customs house brokerage, freight
forwarding and other related transportation
fields. An internship program is also available
which allow students the opportunity to work
with companies that are involved in international
business. This provides excellent experience
and the chance to network with people who may
be potential employers. Cornerstone Systems
is proud to be affiliated with this internship
program and students will now have the opportunity
to work in the Portsmouth, VA office to learn
the inland transportation side of the business.
Collis Bryant, Transportation Manager for the
Portsmouth office, recently spoke at the International
Maritime Ports & Logistics Management Institute’s
luncheon held October 17th. Honored to be their
first invited guest speaker, Collis discussed
the inland side of the business and shared experiences
and details of working for Cornerstone Systems.
Cornerstone does anticipate continuing on its
current course of strategic growth and expansion
with particular emphasis on port areas.
